Writing Fellow Commitments


Commitments

Writing Fellows can most successfully work with faculty and students when expectations and responsibilities have been clearly outlined, and communication lines are open.

Requirements: Before You Apply

  • Course must be a 16-week (face-to-face, hybrid, or online) course without a discussion section
  • Course must include at least 2 scaffolded writing assignments OR a scaffolded semester-long writing project
  • Instructor must be willing to work collaboratively with your Writing Fellow (WF) and the KUWC Assistant Director
  • Instructor must upload the course syllabus, writing assignments, rubrics, and sample papers with the online application. **Drafts of these materials are appropriate for initial application 

Commitments: If Accepted, Instructors Must

  • Before the semester starts/beginning of the semester:

    • Submit any final syllabi, writing assignments, rubrics, and sample papers a few weeks in advance of the semester
    • Add a “WF section” to your syllabus explaining the WFs role in the course **ask the Assistant Director if you want our WF statement
    • Meet with the KUWC’s Assistant Director to finalize WF semester schedule and meet with your WF at the beginning of the semester
    • Add WF to your course’s Blackboard site
    • Introduce the WF to the class, establish credibility for the program, and set expectations for meeting with WF on the first day of class
  • Ongoing:
    • Require all students to work with the WF at least once in the semester (or once for each major assignment) and encourage them to incorporate the WF’s feedback into their drafts
    • Adhere to the schedule agreed upon at the beginning of the semester; if changes must be made, notify the KUWC’s Assistant Director as soon as possible
    • Stay in contact with your WF and respond to any correspondence from the KUWC’s Assistant Director
  • End of Semester:
    • Distribute an end-of-semester WF survey to all of your students

Commitments: The KUWC Commits to the Following

  • The KUWC Assistant Director will work with faculty to revise and/or scaffold assignments if necessary
  • WFs will provide the workshops, peer-review sessions and consultations agreed upon at the beginning of the semester, with the KUWC Assistant Director providing support when necessary
  • WFs will provide the number of consulting hours agreed upon at the beginning of the semester
  • The WF and KUWC Assistant Director will adhere to the schedule agreed upon at the beginning of the semester; if changes must be made, the KUWC Assistant Director will communicate with the instructor
  • The WF and KUWC Assistant Director will respond to communication from the instructor in a timely manner
